Dear Jones School Family,
My name is Sherry Cox, and I am the new principal at Jones Intermediate School. This is an exciting and wonderful time in my life as I take on my new role at Jones in the Mt. Airy City School District. I am fortunate and blessed to have my family by my side. I am married to Bryan Cox, and we have two daughters. Meredith is a rising sophomore at Mt. Airy High School, and Avery is a rising 8th grader at Mt. Airy Middle School.
I have been a resident of Mt. Airy for the past 22 years, an educator for the past 23 years and a parent of children in Mt. Airy City Schools for the past 10 years. Because of this, I am very familiar with the quality education and services provided to the students of Jones Intermediate School. However, NOW is also an exciting and wonderful time to be a part of Jones Intermediate and everything it has to offer our students!
As we look ahead to the new school year, we have many valuable programs and services to enrich and challenge our students. We will continue to offer differentiated instruction, PBL (Problem Based Learning and Project Based Learning), the Leader In Me Program, DARE, Robotics, STEAM, blended learning (utilizing computers/technology) and visual and performing arts. New to Jones this year is the restructuring of our AIG/HAG program to individualize and personalize education for our brightest and most resourceful students. We are definitely trying to think outside of the box as we work to provide rigor and challenge these students to meet their highest potential. Spanish will also be taught at Jones Intermediate this year, as students will have the opportunity for weekly face-to-face instruction with a bilingual instructor. In addition, we will be adding Schoology to our instructional toolbox. Schoology is an online learning management system that will allow our teachers and staff to create more engaging content, design lessons and assess student understanding. It is also a tool that will allow for more frequent and better parent communication.
At Jones, we also strive to engage our parents in their child’s educational journey. There are opportunities for parents to serve and be a part of the school and decision-making process. Some of these include School Improvement Team representative, Parent Teacher Organization, as well as meetings with administration, teachers & parents involving specific student needs or programs offered. If you have a suggestion or recommendation on how to help your child grow, make one of our programs better or the school more successful, please let us know. Dr. Nido Qubein, president of High Point University, states that “your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.”
I am excited about the opportunity of a new start for me as principal and partnering with you and your child in a new start to their educational journey!
