Teacher Feature November 2019

What is your educational background?

I attended:

  • Franklin and White Plains Elementary (K-5)
  • Gentry Middle (6-8)
  • North Surry High (9-12)
  • Surry Community - Associate of Arts Degree - Honor Graduate
  • Lees-McRae - Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education - Honor Graduate

Where do you teach? I teach 5th-grade math and science at Jones Intermediate School.

How many years have you been in education? This is my tenth year in education and my sixth year teaching 5th grade.  I taught middle school special education prior to teaching 5th grade.

Tells us about your family. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Nathan, for 10 years. We have two amazing children.  Nicolas is a 4th-grade student in the DLI program at Jones Intermediate and Karley Jo is a 1st-grade student in the DLI program at BHT.  We live on our family farm and have three labs (Maggie, Remi, and Blaze), two horses (Goober and Buttercup), one donkey (Josie), and many cows.  We spend the majority of our time as a family working on our farm, hunting, or attending Nicolas and Karley Jo's sporting events.

What is your favorite part of the year and why? My favorite part of the year is autumn.  I love when the temperature starts dropping, watching the leaves change colors, football, chicken stews, fall decorations, pumpkin carving, roasting pumpkin seeds, hunting, and knowing the holidays are just around the corner.

Finish this statement: I want every child to feel loved and valued because each child deserves to have someone that cares about them and believes in them.  I want to help every child reach their full potential in life.  I want my students to know that no matter what they go through in life they can grow up to be successful, respectable adults.

Ask your class or group of students to describe you using 3 adjectives. Loving, kind, and funny
